Q-Tip Gives Iggy Azalea A Lesson About Hip-Hop

“Fancy,” rapper, Iggy Azalea has come under a lot of criticism this past year and more recently with her Grammy nomination for Best Hip-Hop Album. Azealia Banks has long called out Iggy Azalea for her cultural appropriation and sat down with Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning for an emotional interview explaining her opinion on Iggy:

“Here’s the thing with Iggy Azalea, this is the thing, I feel, just like in this country, whenever it comes to our things, like black issues or black politics or black music or whatever, there’s always this undercurrent of kind of like a, Fuck you.” Banks said.

Saturday, after co-signing Azealia Banks, Q-Tip gave Iggy a lesson in Hip-Hop 101 via a series of tweets explaining to her what Hip-Hop means to the Black culture:

Q-Tip’s words came under much praise as cultural appropriation is a very sensitive topic for the Hip-Hop culture with white artists such as Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, Macklemore & Riff-Raff getting major acclimation for copying Hip-Hop culture. This is a very important time in Black history and a time where everyone needs to wake up and pay close attention. As we continue to deal with the injustices of Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin & Tamir Rice, the police brutality on the Black community, the recent protests across America, the racist comments of Donald Sterling, and the continuous issue of cultural appropriation of the Hip-Hip culture, we must remember to continue to protest and voice our opinions. As DJ Afrika Bambaataa says, there are 5 elements of Hip-Hop: DJing, Emceeing, Breaking, Tagging and most importantly KNOWLEDGE. Spread knowledge to those who don’t know what it is like to live as an black person, interpret the true meaning of Hip-Hop and bring factual revelations into the culture.
